Dubai Gold Rate vs India Gold Rate: Why the Gap Exists

Dubai Gold Rate vs India Gold Rate: Why the Gap Exists

The Indian gold rate is higher than the Dubai rate mainly because India adds a 15% import duty on gold and 3% GST at sale, while Dubai's rate is the international price plus a small dealer premium, with 5% VAT added at billing. Local demand premiums in India and the daily movement of the rupee against the dirham widen or narrow the gap from one day to the next.

Think of both rates as the same block of gold wearing different layers of cost. Peel the layers back one at a time and the gap stops looking mysterious.

Where do both rates start?

Gold is traded globally in US dollars per troy ounce, and one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Every jeweller in Deira and every jeweller in Jaipur ultimately prices off that same number. If the international price rises by 1% overnight, both rates rise.

The difference is the currency route. The UAE dirham has been fixed at 1 USD = 3.6725 AED since 1997, so converting the global price into dirhams is pure arithmetic. India has no such peg. The rupee moves every trading day, so the Indian rate carries currency movement that the Dubai rate in AED does not.

Today's Dubai rates by karat are below, with the rupee value next to each dirham figure.

The first layer is India's import duty

Gold that comes into India attracts customs duty, and jewellers and bullion dealers pass it into the domestic rate. In May 2026 that duty went up from 6% to 15%.

Why does duty hit so hard? Because it applies to the value of the metal itself, not to a margin. This single layer explains most of the gap: Indian gold is costlier before a jeweller has added a rupee of margin or the government has charged GST. Dubai's rate has no equivalent layer, which is the first of the reasons gold is cheaper in Dubai.

The jump from 6% to 15% is why many buyers noticed the Dubai rate looking far more attractive through 2026. We look at what the hike did to different groups of buyers in how the 15% duty changed the Dubai advantage.

Does GST or VAT make the bigger difference?

Here the two countries are closer than people assume.

TaxIndiaUAE
On the gold value3% GST5% VAT
On making charges5% GST (when billed separately)5% VAT
Who pays itEvery buyerResidents pay the full 5%; overseas tourists 18+ can reclaim 87% of it, minus AED 3.60 per transaction, at participating stores

On sales tax alone, a UAE resident pays slightly more on the gold value than an Indian buyer. The tourist refund turns that around for overseas visitors, but only at shops in the scheme. The full list of taxes on both sides is set out in our UAE VAT vs India GST comparison.

Why Indian dealers add a premium (or a discount)

Duty and tax are fixed percentages. The next layer isn't. India's domestic gold price can trade at a premium or a discount to the "landed" cost, depending on demand and supply inside the country.

  • Festival and wedding seasons such as Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and the winter wedding months tend to lift demand, and dealers can charge more over the landed cost.
  • Quiet months or a sudden spike in the global price can push buyers away, and dealers may offer gold below the landed cost to keep stock moving.
  • City-level rates differ slightly across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kochi because of transport, local jewellers' associations and how each market sets its morning rate.

A practical point for NRIs: the morning rate printed in an Indian newspaper and the rate your family jeweller charges at noon may not match, because many jewellers revise during the day. Dubai has a premium too, but it's small. The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group publishes daily rates for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K that most retailers follow.

How the rupee moves both rates

When you see a Dubai price in rupees, you're looking at two conversions: dollars to dirhams (fixed) and dirhams to rupees (floating). If the rupee weakens against the dirham, the Dubai rate in rupees rises even though shops in Deira haven't changed their board.

The same weakness also pushes up the Indian domestic rate, because importers pay more rupees for each dollar of gold. So the rupee moves both sides, though not always by the same amount on the same day. Our guide to how the Dubai price is converted into rupees shows that conversion step by step.

Stacking the layers in one example

Take one gram of 24K and use simple example numbers, not today's prices. Suppose the global price works out to ₹10,000 per gram after conversion, and treat the Dubai premium as small enough to ignore for the sake of the sum.

  1. Dubai, before VAT: about ₹10,000.
  2. India after 15% duty: ₹10,000 + ₹1,500 = ₹11,500 landed cost.
  3. India after 3% GST: ₹11,500 + ₹345 = ₹11,845.
  4. Dubai after 5% VAT: ₹10,000 + ₹500 = ₹10,500.
  5. Dubai for a refund-eligible tourist: roughly ₹10,000 + ₹500 − ₹435 = about ₹10,065, before the small per-transaction fee.

In this simplified case the Indian gram costs about ₹1,345 more than the Dubai gram with VAT. Add a festive premium in India and the gap grows; add a discount and it shrinks. Real-world figures will differ because duty is calculated on an official tariff value and premiums shift daily.

How the gap has behaved over time

The chart below plots the Dubai 24K rate over the past year. Watch how it moves with the global price; the Indian rate follows the same shape but sits higher because of the layers above.

Dubai gold price chart (per gram, ₹ INR)

Over the past year, 24K gold in Dubai moved from AED 486.70 to AED 481.14 per gram (-1.14%), with a high of AED 627.96 and a low of AED 460.36. In rupees it went from ₹11,755.01 to ₹12,438.24 (+5.81%).

What the gap does and doesn't tell you

One common mistake is reading the gap as a promise of savings. It isn't. It's a measure of how much tax and market friction sits inside the Indian price on a given day, and only part of that friction can be avoided by buying abroad.

The rate gap is a gram-level number. It says nothing about your final bill. Making charges, the design, the refund and Indian customs can each move your total more than the rate gap does. That full shopping calculation is covered in our main guide on whether gold is really cheaper in Dubai.

Duty rates are set by the Indian government and can change in a Budget or by notification. Confirm the current rate with CBIC before you rely on any comparison.

Quick recap of the five layers

  • Same global price in USD per troy ounce on both sides.
  • India adds 15% import duty; Dubai adds nothing comparable.
  • India charges 3% GST on gold; the UAE charges 5% VAT, partly refundable for tourists.
  • Indian rates carry a seasonal premium or discount; Dubai's premium is small.
  • The floating rupee shifts both rates in rupee terms every day.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Indian gold rate usually higher than Dubai's?
Mostly because of India's import duty, now 15%, which is built into the domestic price before GST. Dubai's rate is the international price plus a small premium. Local Indian demand premiums and the floating rupee add to the gap on most days.
Does the gap between Dubai and India gold rates stay the same?
No. It changes with the global gold price, the rupee's value against the dirham, India's duty rate and seasonal premiums or discounts in the Indian market. A gap you saw last month may be noticeably different today.
Is the Dubai rate the same as the international spot price?
Close, but not identical. Dubai retail rates are set from the international spot price plus a small premium, and the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group publishes daily rates for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K that most shops follow.
Do Indian city gold rates differ from each other?
Slightly. Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kochi can show small differences because of local jewellers' associations, transport costs and how each market sets its daily rate. All of them build in India's import duty, so they normally sit above the Dubai rate.
