Who buys 14K gold?
14K is the everyday karat in the US and much of Europe. In Dubai you will mostly see it in branded diamond jewellery, watches and lightweight fashion pieces. It is harder and more scratch-resistant than 22K, which is why it suits rings and bracelets worn every day.
For Indian buyers the catch is resale. Jewellers in India value old gold by its gold content, so a 14K chain is worth a little over half of the same weight in 24K. If you are buying gold as savings, 22K or 24K holds value better.
How the 14K price is worked out
We take the live 24K rate and multiply it by 0.585. So if 24K is AED 100 a gram, 14K is about AED 58.50. Making charges and 5% VAT come on top in a shop, and design-heavy pieces can carry making charges of 20% or more.
