A kilogram of 24K gold is worth 1,000 times the per-gram rate. Today in Dubai that rate is ₹12,320.35 (AED 480.76) a gram, so a kilo bar's gold value is a thousand times that figure, before the dealer's premium. In plain terms, you're looking at a sum well into crores of rupees, or hundreds of thousands of dirhams.

At that size, small details move big money. A one-dirham difference per gram is AED 1,000 on the bar.

A kilo of gold in other units

Kilo bars in Dubai are almost always 24K (999 or 999.9). You won't find kilo-weight jewellery sold as a single item, though a large bridal order can add up to it.

How a kilo bar is priced

Large bars are the cheapest way to buy gold per gram, because refining and handling costs are spread over so much metal. Here's how a quote is built, using illustrative numbers rather than today's.

ComponentExampleNotes
Gold value1,000 g × AED 400 = AED 400,000Based on the 24K rate on the day
Bar premiumSay AED 1,500Much lower per gram than small bars
VATCheck the invoiceInvestment gold of 99%+ can be zero-rated in B2B trade
QuoteAbout AED 401,500About AED 401.50 per gram all-in

Compare that with a 10 g bar, where a premium of AED 60 or so adds AED 6 a gram. The kilo bar's premium in this example adds only AED 1.50 a gram. Our guide to buying gold bars in Dubai covers brands, assay certificates and which sizes trade most easily.

Paying for a kilo: identification and reporting

Expect paperwork. Precious metal dealers in the UAE are required to identify buyers and to report any cash deal of AED 55,000 or more. A kilo bar is far above that, so have your passport or Emirates ID ready, whether you pay cash or not. Most buyers at this level use a bank transfer, which leaves a clean trail on both sides.

If you're thinking about cards, foreign exchange fees and limits can add up fast on a purchase this large. Our page on paying by card or cash in Dubai sets out the trade-offs.

Can you take 1 kg of gold to India?

Yes, but not duty-free. India's eligible passenger scheme allows Indian passport holders or people of Indian origin returning after at least six months abroad to bring up to 1 kg of gold, in any form including bars, on payment of duty in convertible foreign currency. Short visits to India of up to 30 days during those six months can be ignored.

The concessional rate is 15% (10% basic customs duty plus 5% AIDC), in force since the May 2026 duty hike; before that it was 6%. Importantly, duty is calculated on the value Customs assesses (the tariff value), not on your Dubai bill.

A worked customs example

Imagine Farhan, who has worked in Abu Dhabi for three years, flies to Kochi with a 1 kg bar. Assume, purely for illustration, that Customs assesses its value at ₹1,00,00,000.

On the cash side, he'll need to declare any foreign currency notes above US$5,000, or total foreign exchange above US$10,000, which a duty payment of this size will almost certainly exceed. Our full explainer on the 1 kg eligible passenger scheme covers documents and timing, and how Customs values your gold explains the tariff value. Rules change, so confirm with CBIC or Indian Customs before you fly.

What about a kilo of jewellery?

Families planning a large wedding sometimes add up their order and find it close to a kilo across all the pieces. The maths changes completely. Jewellery is usually 22K, so the gold value uses the 22K rate of ₹11,285.28 (AED 440.37) a gram, which is lower than 24K. But making charges come in, often several times the premium on a bar, and 5% VAT applies to the whole invoice.

Take an illustrative 1,000 g of 22K at AED 366 a gram, with making at an average of AED 25 a gram:

So a kilo of jewellery holds less pure gold than a kilo bar (916 g versus 999 g) yet costs more. That's normal; you're paying for design and craft. Just don't think of it as an investment equal to a bar. On the India side, only the duty-free jewellery allowance of each passenger (40 g for women and 20 g for men after a year abroad) is exempt, and the rest is dutiable.

Is a kilo bar the right buy for you?

It suits you if you're investing a large sum, want the lowest premium per gram, and plan to hold for years. The five-year chart below gives a sense of how the 24K price has moved over a longer horizon.

Dubai gold price chart (per gram, ₹ INR)

Over the past five years, 24K gold in Dubai moved from AED 216.17 to AED 481.14 per gram (+122.57%), with a high of AED 627.96 and a low of AED 192.57. In rupees it went from ₹4,361.66 to ₹12,438.24 (+185.17%).

It may not suit you if you might need to sell part of it. You can't sell half a bar. Many buyers split the same money into several 100 g or 10-tola bars for flexibility, accepting a slightly higher premium.

Storage matters too. A kilo of gold is small (roughly the size of a smartphone, a little thicker) but extremely valuable. Our page on storing gold bars safely looks at bank lockers, vaults and insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How many tola are in 1 kg of gold?
One kilogram contains about 85.7 tola, using the standard tola of 11.6638 grams. In troy ounces it is about 32.15. Kilo bars are always sold and invoiced by gram weight, so these conversions are mainly useful for comparing quotes.
Is 1 kg of gold cheaper per gram than smaller bars?
Usually yes. The dealer's premium covers refining, minting and handling, and on a kilo bar that cost is spread over 1,000 grams. Small bars and coins carry a much higher premium per gram, so the all-in price per gram falls as the bar size goes up.
Can I carry 1 kg of gold from Dubai to India duty-free?
No. Gold bars are never duty-free in baggage. Eligible passengers returning after at least six months abroad can bring up to 1 kg on payment of 15% duty in foreign currency, assessed on Customs' tariff value. Check the latest rules before travelling.
Do I need ID to buy a kilo of gold in Dubai?
Yes, expect to show your passport or Emirates ID. UAE precious metal dealers must identify customers and report cash transactions of AED 55,000 or more, and a kilo bar is far above that threshold whatever way you pay.
