A pavan, also called a sovereign, is 8 grams of gold. It's the unit most families in Kerala and Tamil Nadu use to talk about jewellery, so "one pavan of 22K" means 8 g of 22K gold. In Dubai, that works out to eight times the 22K per-gram rate of ₹11,285.28 (AED 440.37), before making charges and VAT.
If you've ever heard an aunt in Thrissur say a bride wore "fifty pavan", this is the unit she meant.
Where does the word "sovereign" come from?
The name comes from the British gold sovereign, a 22-carat coin that circulated in India during colonial times. It weighed just under 8 grams. Over time, South Indian jewellers rounded it to a clean 8 g and kept the name. "Pavan" is the Malayalam and Tamil word that grew up alongside it.
Today the pavan is a counting unit, not a coin. Shops in Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai and Madurai display rates per pavan as well as per gram, and Gulf jewellers with large Malayali customer bases often do the same.
Converting wedding pavans into grams
Wedding gold in South Indian families is often agreed in pavans. This table turns those counts into grams, the unit every shop actually bills in.
| Pavan | Grams | What it often covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8 | A ring, a small chain, a coin gift |
| 2.5 | 20 | A chain with pendant, or a single bangle |
| 5 | 40 | A pair of bangles or a light necklace |
| 10 | 80 | A short necklace set with earrings |
| 25 | 200 | A modest bridal set |
| 50 | 400 | A fuller bridal collection |
The "what it covers" column is only a rough guide. A handcrafted Kerala necklace uses gold very differently from a machine-made chain, so the same weight can look quite different.
What does 8 grams of gold cost in Dubai?
Today's 22K rate is ₹11,285.28 (AED 440.37) per gram, so a pavan is that figure multiplied by eight. For 24K it's eight times ₹12,320.35 (AED 480.76). The table below shows the live price for common weights of 22K, so you can read off 8 g and its multiples directly.

Pricing two pavan in Dubai, step by step
Say Lakshmi, working in Al Qusais, wants a 16 g (two-pavan) 22K chain for her daughter. Using illustrative figures:
- Gold: 16 g × AED 362 = AED 5,792
- Making: AED 22 per gram × 16 = AED 352
- Subtotal: AED 6,144
- VAT at 5%: AED 307.20
- Total: AED 6,451.20, or about AED 3,225.60 per pavan all-in
To compare with a Kerala shop, convert that per-pavan figure into rupees and set it against the Indian per-pavan rate plus 3% GST and making. Our guides on Dubai versus Kerala gold prices and Dubai versus Chennai do exactly that.
Reading a per-pavan rate from a Kerala shop
Relatives back home will often quote the "pavan rate" from the morning paper or a jeweller's board. To set it against Dubai, divide it by eight for a per-gram rupee figure. Then line it up with the Dubai 22K rate in rupees shown above.
Two adjustments keep the comparison honest. First, the Indian pavan rate includes import duty but usually not the 3% GST, which is added at billing. Second, Kerala shops often charge making as a percentage or as "wastage", and those charges can be larger than the gap in the gold rate itself. Ask for the full bill on both sides, not just the board rate.
Is a pavan always 22K?
By tradition, yes. When a family says "pavan", they almost always mean 22K (916) gold, because that's the standard for South Indian jewellery. The 8 g figure is a weight, though, and you can have a pavan of 18K or 24K. Just remember that 8 g of 18K holds only 6 g of pure gold.
If you're unsure what the 916 stamp means or how to check it, our explainer on 916 gold covers the marks to look for in Dubai and in India.
Pavans and the customs allowance
India's duty-free jewellery limits are set in grams, but they translate neatly into pavans:
- Women: 40 g, which is exactly 5 pavan.
- Men and other passengers: 20 g, which is 2.5 pavan.
These apply to Indian residents and tourists of Indian origin who have stayed abroad for more than one year, and they cover bona fide personal jewellery. Under Baggage Rules 2026 they're weight limits only. Anything above the limit is dutiable. If you're on a short trip of under a year, new jewellery bought in Dubai doesn't get this allowance. Check with Indian Customs or CBIC before you fly, since rules can change.
Even a 50 g purchase, just over six pavan, crosses a woman's limit. So if a bride's family plans a 25-pavan purchase in Dubai, only a small part of it fits inside one woman's allowance. The rest needs to be declared, and duty is assessed on Customs' own valuation. Plan the trip around that, not around the shop price alone.
Pavan coins as gifts
Some families give a one-pavan coin at naming ceremonies, birthdays or weddings. Dubai jewellers commonly stock 8 g coins in 22K and 24K, some with Lakshmi designs and others with simple motifs. Coins are bullion, though, and gold coins are never duty-free in baggage, so they must be declared if you carry them to India. Our page on gold coins as gifts covers sizes, packaging and what to check.
Common pavan mix-ups
- Pavan vs tola. A tola is 11.6638 g, nearly half as heavy again as a pavan. They're not interchangeable.
- Per pavan vs per gram. A per-pavan quote is eight times a per-gram quote. Comparing one shop's pavan rate with another's gram rate looks like a huge difference that isn't real.
- Gross vs net. On stone-studded Kerala necklaces, ask for the net gold weight in grams, then convert to pavans.
Before you buy by the pavan
- Convert the family's pavan count into grams first.
- Price the gold at today's 22K rate in Dubai, then add making and VAT.
- Check how much of the total fits within the customs allowance for whoever is carrying it.
- Keep the itemised invoice, showing weight in grams, for customs and future resale.
- For how the pavan sits among other units like 10 g and tola, see our per-gram guide.
