Ten grams of 22K gold in Dubai costs about ₹1,12,853 (AED 4,403.70) at today's rate, and 10 grams of 24K costs about ₹1,23,203 (AED 4,807.60). India quotes gold per 10 grams by habit, while Dubai shops post a per-gram rate. To convert, multiply the Dubai gram rate by 10.

Simple? Mostly. The trouble starts when the two numbers get compared without adjusting for duty, GST and the karat behind each quote.

Why does India use 10 grams as the price unit?

Before metrication, Indian gold was traded by the tola, which weighs 11.6638 g. When India moved to grams, the trade needed a new headline unit that felt similar in size. Ten grams was the obvious round number close to a tola, and it became the standard way newspapers, TV tickers and jewellers' boards display the price.

There's also a practical reason. A single gram price is a smaller number that moves in small steps, while a 10 g figure makes daily changes easier to read at a glance. Indian bullion and commodity markets commonly quote this way too, so the unit runs from wholesale right down to the neighbourhood jeweller.

That history is also why some people still say "tola" when they mean 10 g. Our explainer on the true weight of a tola untangles that habit.

Dubai per gram vs India per 10 grams

Here's how the two systems line up side by side.

The last row is the one people miss. An Indian 10 g rate already carries import duty. A Dubai rate does not. So even after converting units and currency, the Indian number will be higher, and that gap is not "profit" until you've accounted for any customs duty you'd owe flying back.

Converting the Dubai rate to a 10 g figure, by scenario

If you're reading a Dubai board in AED

Move the decimal one place right. AED 362.50 per gram becomes AED 3,625 per 10 g. Then multiply by the day's AED to INR rate (currently ₹25.63 per dirham) for a rupee figure.

If you're comparing with a jeweller in Kochi or Hyderabad

Get both quotes for the same karat. Indian jewellers often display 22K and 24K per 10 g. Convert the Dubai 22K gram rate to 10 g and rupees, then compare. Remember the Indian figure includes duty but not GST; the Dubai figure includes neither duty nor VAT. Our detailed walkthrough on turning a Dubai rate into an Indian-equivalent rate adds those layers step by step.

If a relative quotes "per tola" and means 10 g

Treat it as a 10 g price. If they really mean the full tola, divide by 11.6638 instead of 10 to get a per-gram figure.

If you're pricing 21K or 18K

Indian boards rarely show 21K, and some skip 18K, so you may need to build the 10 g figure yourself. Dubai publishes both: 21K is ₹10,780.18 (AED 420.66) and 18K is ₹9,240.26 (AED 360.57) per gram right now. Multiply by 10. If you only have an Indian 24K rate, multiply it by the purity (0.875 for 21K, 0.75 for 18K) for a rough equivalent, then check it against what the jeweller actually quotes.

If you're quoting a price to family back home

Give them the 10 g figure in rupees, because that's what they're used to hearing on the evening news. Say clearly that it's the Dubai rate before VAT and making, so nobody compares it with a final Indian bill and assumes you've found a miracle deal.

If you're watching for a good day to buy

Use the same unit every day. Flipping between gram and 10 g figures on different days is how decimal slips happen. The 30-day chart below tracks the 22K rate so you can see the recent trend.

Dubai gold price chart (per gram, ₹ INR)

Over the past 30 days, 22K gold in Dubai moved from AED 456.02 to AED 440.72 per gram (-3.36%), with a high of AED 456.02 and a low of AED 421.69. In rupees it went from ₹12,011.12 to ₹11,393.32 (-5.14%).

A worked example: 10 grams in Dubai vs India

Let's use round illustrative figures to show the method, not today's prices.

The headline gap looks like ₹10,200 per 10 g. Now layer in the bills. In Dubai, 5% VAT on gold plus making (say AED 200) adds AED 190, though an eligible tourist reclaims most of it. In India, GST adds 3% on the gold (₹2,790) and 5% on making.

Then the customs question. If the buyer has lived abroad over a year and the piece is within their allowance (40 g for women, 20 g for men), no duty applies. If not, duty is charged on the dutiable value, which can wipe out much of the saving. Our guide to comparing Dubai and Indian prices properly covers every scenario.

Mistakes people make with 10 g prices

Is 10 g a sensible amount to buy?

As a purchase size, 10 g is popular for coins and small bars, because it maps to the unit everyone talks about. A 10 g 24K coin or bar is easy to price, easy to resell and easy to explain to family. For jewellery, 10 g is roughly a mid-weight chain or a slim pair of bangles, though designs vary widely.

Bars and coins of 10 g carry a higher premium per gram than larger bars, simply because the minting cost is spread over less gold. That's the trade-off for flexibility.

Quick recap

Frequently asked questions

What is the 22K gold rate per 10 grams in Dubai today?
At today's rate, 10 grams of 22K gold in Dubai costs about ₹1,12,853 (AED 4,403.70), before making charges and 5% VAT. The figure updates through the day as the international gold price moves, so check the live rate before you buy.
Is the Indian 10 gram gold rate inclusive of GST?
Usually not. Most Indian jewellers display a gold rate before GST and add 3% GST on the gold value at billing, plus 5% on separately billed making charges. Always ask whether a quoted rate is inclusive or exclusive of GST.
Why is 10 grams of gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?
The main reason is that Indian prices include import duty, which rose from 6% to 15% in May 2026. Dubai prices do not carry that duty. The real saving depends on VAT, making charges and whether you owe Indian customs duty when you bring the gold home.
