Estimates only. Customs duty is charged on the value Customs assesses (not your bill); 15% is the concessional rate for eligible passengers. Check current rules with Indian Customs before you fly. The Indian rate defaults to an estimate (Dubai rate + 15% import duty) – replace it with your jeweller’s quote for a true comparison.

How the comparison works

The duty-free jewellery allowance applies only if you have lived abroad for more than a year: 40 grams for women and 20 grams for men. Eligible passengers returning after six months or more can bring up to 1 kg by paying the concessional 15% duty in foreign currency. Read how much gold you can carry from Dubai before you plan a big purchase.

Getting a fair Indian rate

The Indian rate box starts with an estimate (the Dubai rate plus 15% import duty). For a true comparison, replace it with the per-gram rate your local jeweller quotes for the same karat. Ask for making charges as a percentage so you can enter both sides like for like.

Rates are indicative and may differ from jewellers’ final prices, which include making charges and 5% VAT. Rupee (₹) prices are Dubai prices converted to INR, not gold rates in India.

Frequently asked questions

Is it still cheaper to buy gold in Dubai after the 15% import duty?
Often yes for jewellery within your duty-free allowance, because Dubai has no import duty and tourists get most of the 5% VAT back. Above the allowance, customs duty can wipe out the saving. Use the calculator with your own numbers to check.
Does the calculator include the VAT refund?
Yes. Tick the tourist box and it deducts 87% of the 5% VAT minus the AED 3.60 fee, which is how the UAE tourist refund scheme pays out. UAE residents should untick it.
How is customs duty calculated?
Duty applies only to grams above your duty-free allowance, on the value Customs assesses. The calculator uses the live gold value and the rate you enter, 15% by default for eligible passengers. Always confirm the current rules with Indian Customs.
