Estimate only. Eligible passengers (Indian passport holders or people of Indian origin returning after 6+ months abroad) pay the concessional 15% (10% BCD + 5% AIDC) on up to 1 kg, in foreign currency. Others pay the general baggage rate on dutiable goods – the 38.5% default is commonly quoted; Customs decides the final rate and value. Always declare dutiable gold and confirm current rules with Indian Customs (CBIC) before you fly.
How the duty is worked out
- Allowance first. If you’ve lived abroad for more than a year, 40 g (women) or 20 g (men and other passengers) of bona fide personal jewellery is duty-free. Below one year, new jewellery has no allowance.
- Bars and coins are always dutiable, whatever their weight.
- Rate. Eligible passengers (Indian passport holders or people of Indian origin returning after six months or more abroad) pay the concessional 15% (10% basic customs duty + 5% AIDC) on up to 1 kg, in foreign currency. Others pay the general baggage rate.
- Value. Duty is charged on the value Customs assesses (its tariff value), not your shop bill. The calculator uses today’s rate as a close estimate.
Before you fly
Carry the invoices, keep jewellery in your hand luggage, and use the red channel or the Customs e-declaration if anything is dutiable. Read the full guide on how much gold you can carry from Dubai and the 1 kg eligible passenger scheme. Rules change, so check the latest CBIC notification before travelling.
Rates are indicative and may differ from jewellers’ final prices, which include making charges and 5% VAT. Rupee (₹) prices are Dubai prices converted to INR, not gold rates in India.
